History Maker

WeAreFearless.com is pleased to introduce a remarkable man to the WAF family, Reverend Father, Boniface Hardin, O.S.B.  Father Hardin is a passionate follower of Christ Jesus.  He also happens to be a Catholic priest.  As a highly respected and proven man of action, Father Hardin has worked as a civil rights and community leader.  He not only stood in the gap for the educational advancement of African Americans who lived in the City of Indianapolis, Indiana, but he is also founder and current president of Martin University.  Listen to the 1st of our three-part interview series with Father Hardin below...

Exclusive Interview With

Reverend Father. Boniface Hardin, O.S.B.

Father Boniface Hardin, O.S.B. is the founder of Martin University, in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Father Hardin is dedicated to the gospel of Jesus Christ.  His mission is to teach the love of Christ; to teach people; to heal people; to teach us to love each other and to prepare people for the life of the world to come.  It is that spirit that keeps people going, to do all the things that they can do.

Father Hardin translates the gospel message in terms of the needs of the people he comes across daily.  He has a passion for serving the disenfranchised, those that have been rejected opportunities by society’s elite.  At one time he dealt with this vision in terms of the Civil Rights Movement, which was initially led by Dr. Martin Luther King and other ministers.  He learned from them the notion of being a servant and to be subject to the people he serves.  Sometimes it was in the form of marching, protesting and demonstrating.  At time, it was attending meetings and testifying before city county councilors, legislators, Mayors, or the population.  Other times he attested and affirmed this vision by way of preaching.

Finally, he sought and pursued a vision of the basic needs for the disenfranchised individuals by way of education.  Having shared in the elementary education at Holy Angels Catholic School with a very free flowing education model, Father Hardin examined the availability of high school and higher education in Indianapolis, both inside and outside the system.  He decided that the proper way to make changes for those in need was through a strong sensitive approach of nurturing in higher education by establishing a liberal arts institution, Martin University.  Martin University has a mission of serving the low income, minority adult age persons in a healing and freedom-minded environment.  It is a spiritual environment where people who are a part of Martin University become integrated into a caring, healing and freedom-minded.

The technology of higher education with accreditation and academic standards had to be established, which he did.  Although the technical aspects of an institution of higher learning has its demands and has grown over the years, Father Hardin’s spirit, vision and dreams have remained even stronger.

The community of Martin University is humbled by the character of its students who are often wounded and have suffered in the pursuit of their dream to become a learned person and receive a degree.  Oftentimes, even the staff and faculty are overwhelmed by the same pain as the students they serve.  Thus, the mission and vision of Martin University is not limited to the academic role of the mind, but to the responses and needs of the heart.
